First worn by European men several centuries ago, tights were worn mostly for horseback riding or on figures of high nobility.
King Henry VIII of England wore tights so often that he started the fashion trend for males during his reign. He had such a nice pair of tighted legs that it could rival those of Robin Hood. This is saying a lot because Robin Hood was named THE Man In Tights. (Yes there is now a 1993 movie made just about these Renaissance men in tights….how great is that! A movie about tights!)
People figured that if King Henry VIII and Robin Hood could pull off tights, anyone could and just like the baby boom, the tights phenomenon began.
I mean let’s face it; tights are amazing. They are very versatile, breathable and fun. You can wear them with large sweaters and boots, (more on that in a later post) they can dress up any skirt or dress and you can even wear them under shorts, which is something I still have yet to try.
I personally love tights and no not only for the reason that I don’t have to shave my legs. (Sorry Josh) No I love them because they make any outfit fun. Especially With Halloween just around the corner I made sure to pull out all the stops with my tights game. The crazier the better!
I love looking down at my legs and being surprised again and again as I see glittery moons, or stripes in crazy colors or even cats with milk bottles on them…..
…..which brings me to an outfit I wore the last week.
Yes you would think these rambunctious patterns would be found on 5-10 year old girls and not a 25-year-old woman, but oh no let me tell you; I rocked the s*** out of my cats and their milk bottles. So many people complemented my tights, that you would have thought I was a celebrity. There was even paparazzi around too. (Who cares if it was just my mom taking pictures of my outfit…I am still calling it being Almost Famous.)
Those little cats on my tights mimicked the way I felt, and both of us kept on grinning that whole day. Who would have thought that simple cat tights could make a persons’ whole day?
I found these tights, luckily, at Savers in Hanover ($2.99) about 4 years ago and they still fit like a charm. Sure some of the cats smiles are turning into lopsided grins, but no I am the only one who notices.
I paired my tights with a black high-waisted skirt from Savers Norwood ($6.99) and a simple white and black J. Crew shirt found at Goodwill ($4.99). I picked a black pointed toe ankle booty with silver buckles on the side, ($6.99 Savers) I swear my inner witch was just waiting to come out. I did bring a mustard yellow sweater, not only because it matched the stripes on my cute little cats, but because I live in New England and any type of weather could happen. (I believe I got the sweater from Goodwill $4.49) Total outfit cost: $26.12.
Always remember that if men can pull off tights, women can definitely pull them off and maybe even better. Strive to get the craziest tights you can because there is no age limit when it comes to fun!
Keep it Grand and always Secondhand!
